Everyone has their 2 cents on this so good luck finding out "better" or not.

Same goes for common rail vs not...

Cummins is cummins as long as it isn't a 6.7 you are good to go.

I have been an owner of both a 12v and 24v. My first 12v was a VE pump 1st gen, it was a great truck, had plenty of pulling power and I loved it. The only issue I had with it was that it was an automatic, so I got rid of it and got an HO 24v with a 6 speed manual. And that is an amazing truck to. The 12v's are great because it has a mechanical injection system without computers, so easy enough to mess around with. Now the 24v's have a computer controlled pump so you can easily plug in a bully dog or any of those other tuners and have tons more power at the push of a button. So it really is up to your opinion on which one you like by test driving them. If you get a 12v get a P- Pump 12v 94-98 because they have much more potential for more power easier then on the early VE pump trucks. Just stay with a 5.9 cummins and you will be very happy.

What's wrong with the 6.7? Or is it so new that is hasn't been proven? I know you have (had?) one Mains so I'm just wondering if you had a bad experience with it or just don't trust it as much as the 5.9.

I had one, the emissions garbage is a pain in the ass, can contributes to blown turbos, and head gaskets. Though I had deleted my DPF, and EGR that truck was nothing but problems for me, to the point that I just had it and traded it in.

Now my dad has a 24v 5.9 and that bastard hasn't had 1 issue!

Yeah Mains I hear ya on that one. I have known a few people to have alot of problems with 6.7's. I'm sure at the heart of it its fine. But they put so much emissions control garbage and external peripherals that it really adds to the insult of issues with that engine. every 5.9 24v including mine I have known of has 200k+ with very little issue.
One thing tho I forget to mention Buck 7. If you end up getting a 24v 98-02. Look into getting a FASS. The stock location of the lift pump is a bit bad, On the block. And if it goes out it takes the Injection Pump out with it.
