Kind of old news, but it has surfaced again.

QUOTE
Gary Hoffman, above, sued the Sandia Resort and Casino after it refused to pay a nearly $1.6 million slot machine jackpot. The Casino has said the "jackpot" was the result of a slot machine malfunction.

I actually side with the casino. The max payout possible was 2,500. A malfunction occured and the machine gave a crazy number. They offered to just give him $2,500, which he wasn't even intitled to.

Happens all the time.....if the machines max payout is 2,500 and it says you won 2,000,000...something is obviously wrong.

Casinos don't exist for the patrons benefit.

Seems that some slot manufacturer somewhere should invest in better programmers.

What is shitty about it?

There was a computer glitch...they don't owe the guy squat, but they still offered him some money and he refused it.

How's that shitty?

Let's go with a business analogy. I own a lightbulb company. I (as CEO) write, and verbally inform a customer that it'll cost him $100,000 for us to replace his 200 light propietary bulbs. If a laborer under me goes to the same guy and says "Ah, don't mind him, it's really only gonna be $50,000" which still sticks? Obviously the CEO/Formal contract, that laborer has no authority to say what he did nor for the customer to attempt to hold me to it.

If the machine has a STATED maximum value of $2,500, how the hell can one expect to win more than that? Unless it was a progressive jackpot connected machine, there's no way for it to pay out more than its maximum value.

Malfunctions are malfunctions. If it were valid, they *would* have to pay out. But, since there's no way for the machine to get that high, why the hell should they pay out more than the machine could?

I think it is someone trying to take advantage of what a lot people think is a dirty buisness already. Most poeple think Casinos rip people off (I think people are suckers). This is proof that making a claim agaist someone lots of people already dislike will get public support behind you even if your issue makes no sense. The machine stated $2,500, that is the max you can come away with.

Computers are glitchy. Programs and hardware are imperfect. Becasue of this there are legal limitations and expectations of what to do when things unravel. The casino has taken a proper stand. This guy is upset becasue he wants to be filthy rich for free. If the machine gave him a $3K jackpot, he'd understand that it was a mistake and gladdly walk off with the $2500 limit. He is just wanting to get rich by accident, like most that visit Casinos.

If the machine somehow said he won X amount, I think he's entitled to it. Thats fair to me. There is certainly more to the story here, and the little details are probably very significant. I dont believe the machine is necessarily at fault. Perhaps it was configured incorrectly. It seems unlikely to me that it would somehow come up with a radical jackpot by some kind of computer error. For me, computer errors usually result in a crashed program. This result seems unlikely by error.

What if they had thier $2,500 slots set up for $1.6 million odds to reduce payouts? I wouldn't put it past them. We only know what they've told us about that, and I wouldn't trust them to be absolutely upfront about anything even the slightest bit shady.

It still amazes me how there are so many ridiculous law suits in the US. The machine says void of there is a malfunction. It also says the limit is $2,500. Period. So, how much more obvious can it be? What is left to argue?!
